Cultural institutions are places that present art and organize cultural events. But they are also social spaces that bring people with different interests, experiences and perspectives together. The programming of such institutions can create opportunities for identification for visitors and participants and strengthen communities. They can also be places of learning and function as a space for exchange about art and culture as well as current social issues. In our examination of cultural institutions as social spaces, the focus is primarily on questions of programming, audience and production: What inclusions and exclusions are effective in these spaces? To what extent is the heterogeneity of society reflected in them? Who works in the institutions? Who has what design and decision-making options? What instruments and strategies do cultural institutions use to try to establish themselves as open and diverse social spaces? How can they enable democratic negotiation processes? We are exploring these topics in close cooperation with the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, where some of the course dates will also take place. We will begin by dealing with theoretical approaches from cultural management and museum work on the social significance of cultural institutions. In addition, discussions will take place with experts from the field. Based on this, we will examine specific activities in the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, including the founding of a youth team. The students will conduct research into various initiatives in order to gain practical insights into the everyday life of a museum and acquire application-oriented knowledge of procedures, work processes and methods in cultural management (e.g. visitor research).
The course will take place in the winter semester 2024/25 at the inter-university institution Science and Art, which connects the Prais-Lodron University and the Mozarteum.
